Think that you are supposed to sell or announce something, convey or express a message, explain complicated systems or demonstrate procedures, in short you have a message to communicate what you will do? You can disseminate this message, broadcast it through media or loudspeaker. All these methods will then come under verbal communication. On other hand if you will use a visual medium such as posters, drafts, business logo or magazine ad it will come under visual communication which is actually called graphic designing.
Graphic designers basically work with photographed, painted drawn or computer generated pictures, and they design letterforms as well which make up different typefaces we see in TV ads, movie credits, in books, menus, magazines and on many computer screens. Designers choose, create and organize various elements typography, the images along with the “white space” surrounding them in order to convey a message. Graphic designing can be seen everywhere in our daily life. Whether its a small thing such as a toffee wrapper or a billboard, a T-shirt or a TV commercial, graphic design is being used everywhere to inform, persuade, organize, stimulate, locate, identify, attract and provide pleasure to people.
Graphic design can also be defined as a creative process which merges art with technology to convey and communicate ideas. The graphic designer functions with various communication tools to convey messages from their clients to particular target audience. There are however various types of designs.
Image based design
A professional logo designer creates and develops images in order to represent the message and ideas which their clients require to convey and communicate. Pictures are very powerful tool of communication. They don't only convey information but moods, temperament and emotions as well. People's response to images usually depend on their associations, personalities and experiences.
Type based design
there are various situations when designer has to use the words in order to convey messages, but the designer use these words in a very different way from that of a writer. In designer's point of view the layout of these words are more important . This particular visual forms such as typography, handmade lettering, are used in various communication functions such as posters, product name on package etc. etc.
Image and Type based Designs
Designers sometimes combine typography and images in order to communicate a message. They use their creativity to present words and images in perfect balance so the right message is conveyed to the target audience.
Symbols and logos
Symbols are a very high form of communication and so are the logos. Symbols are conceptional representation of specific ideas or identities. On other hand Logotypes are identifications mostly related to corporations and they are based on a particular typographical treatment of words. Some identifiers may be hybrid, or a creative combination of symbols and logotypes. To create these symbols and identifiers, the graphic designer must possess a clear and sharp vision of corporation or of the idea that is to be conveyed or represented along with that of the target audience.
Graphic design is a vast field of creativity and technology and possess a massive amount of interest and attraction for those who find the skills in themselves from the start. With right kind of guidance and education, one can make place in any of the areas of this vast field.
